The Oracle Machine

The Oracle Machine is a kinetic installation that responds to presence and sound. It cycles through five behavioural states—Dormant, Attentive, Overwhelmed, Receptive, Withdrawn—each governing how it listens, moves, and whether it will accept a consultation. The work explores thresholds between attention and withdrawal, and the ritual of seeking an answer from a system that may refuse to answer.
The Oracle Machine occupies a space between sculpture and performance. Visitors approach; the machine may remain dormant or become attentive. Its fans open or close; its internal logic responds to proximity and acoustic input.
There is no guarantee of response. The oracle may choose to listen, or to withdraw. This uncertainty is central: the work is as much about the act of waiting and the possibility of refusal as it is about any answer given.
In an age of systems that are always "on," The Oracle Machine proposes a machine that breathes, rests, and sometimes says no.
