Technical dossier — The Oracle Machine

Introduction

The Oracle Machine is a kinetic installation that responds to presence and sound. It cycles through five behavioural states—Dormant, Attentive, Overwhelmed, Receptive, Withdrawn—each governing how it listens, moves, and whether it will accept a consultation. The work explores thresholds between attention and withdrawal, and the ritual of seeking an answer from a system that may refuse to answer. This dossier provides technical and spatial requirements for curators and venues.

Behavioural states

I. DormantThe machine rests. Fans closed. No query will be received.
II. AttentiveSomething has been sensed. The system orients without committing.
III. OverwhelmedPresence is too insistent. The oracle withdraws into itself.
IV. ReceptiveA threshold has been crossed. The consultation may begin.
V. WithdrawnThe oracle has closed. Come back later, differently.

Space & environment

Installation & operation

Setup: Installation and teardown by artist or designated technician. Venue to provide power (24 V 1200 W supply or adequate outlets as specified), clear floor area, and recommended clear height.

Provided by artist: The Oracle Machine (kinetic structure, electronics, control unit), power supply, C-stands.

Provided by venue: Power, minimum space as above, optional plinth or floor as agreed.

Operation: No daily maintenance required; contact artist or technician for any technical issues.
